Fresh off of her success in West Side Story Natalie signed up to play opposite Warren Beatty in Splendor in the Grass. The story takes place in the years before the great depression. It centers on Deanie and Bud. The couple is caught between their own desires and the wishes of their parents.
Deanie’s mother tells her that boys do not respect girls who go all the way. Bud’s father tells him not to sleep with Deanie because she may try to trap him into marrying her.
Soon the couple falls apart. Bud’s father tells him to find a different girl to sleep with. Deanie begins to lose her mind and becomes institutionalized. While she is in the hospital the depression hits.
